THE WEDDING PHOTOJOURNALISTAccording to Wikipedia, “Photojournalism (sometimes called photo journalism) is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that creates images in order to tell a news story”. In recent years, this approach to wedding photography has lent itself to the practice of capturing matrimony by many top wedding photographers around the world. This artistic, documentary style may entail black and white or color photos, film or digital wedding photography. Wedding photojournalists work in a documentary manner, easily replacing the narrative itself. There are two primary approaches
to wedding photography that are recognized today: Traditional and
Photojournalistic. Traditional wedding photography provides for more
classically posed images and a great deal of photographer control
and interaction on the day of the wedding. Photojournalistic wedding
photography takes its cue from editorial reporting styles and focuses
more on candid and unposed images with little photographer interaction.
These are two extremes and many of today's photographers will fall
somewhere in the middle of these two styles. As a wedding is a one-time event, the photographer
must be alert and prepared for the unexpected. Shooting a wedding
is both exhausting and invigorating as the photographer is constantly
looking for good angles and opportunities for candid shots. Wedding photojournalism is becoming an increasing trend in the wedding industry. It branches away from traditional photography and the intrusion that is involved. Traditional photographers create bridal images that are mostly posed and scripted. This is often seen in "formals," where the photographer takes posed pictures of the entire family and bridal party together. Photojournalism, on the other hand, allows the day to pass by as usual while the photographer captures wedding images without any involvement in the composition of the photograph. Wedding photojournalism is derived from news photography. Photographers from these fields have filtered into the wedding industry and created a great approach to capturing your wedding day. Posed photography, such as in formals, are usually only for family portraits. Even bride and groom pictures are done using posed photojournalism, where the photographer instructs the couple initially and then captures the couple being natural in that position. Here in MA (Boston) and Albany (NY), photographers at the high-end all use posed photojournalism combined with photojournalistic candid photos and artistic, dramatic perspectives. |
